Curlin - the 2007 Horse of the Year, North America's all-time leading earner, and seven-time Grade 1 winner - will stand at Lane's End for $75,000 upon his retirement, the Versailles, Ky., farm announced Friday. Curlin will join his sire, Smart Strike, who also stands at Lane's End and has a 2009 fee of $150,000.
The Thoroughbred Owners of California and all four national account-wagering companies reached an agreement on Friday that restored wagering on the signal from Hollywood Park to out-of-state customers.
As of Friday evening, Steve Asmussen had won 552 North American races this year, three short of the 555 he won in 2004. Four years ago, he obliterated Jack Van Berg's record of 496 wins, which had stood since 1976.
Thorn Song and Canela will meet for the first time Saturday in the Grade 3 River City Handicap at Churchill, and their similar running styles would seem to be a critical factor in the outcome. At their best, both are tenacious front-runners.
An unbeaten horse, Euroears, and a Dubai Golden Shaheen winner, Kelly's Landing, will start alongside each other as the favorites in a field of eight Saturday at Churchill Downs in the $56,000 Bet on Sunshine.
Ready Set heads the Discovery Handicap on Saturday at Aqueduct, a late-season opportunity for 3-year-olds to score a graded stakes victory within their own division before turning 4.
The last time Bob Black Jack was in the public's eye he was fading from the lead in the Kentucky Derby on his way to a 16th-place finish behind Big Brown. He will return to racing on Saturday in the Vernon Underwood Stakes at Hollywood Park.
What kind of field can you attract for a mere $55,000 purse? Well in the case of Saturday's Radar Love Stakes at Calder, three graded stakes winners - Golden Spikes, Hey Byrn, and Paradise Dancer.
